What Causes Varicose Veins and Spider Veins?

Varicose veins and spider veins often arise from vein health conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This condition develops slowly over time and is caused by several factors, including excess weight, wearing restrictive clothes, and standing or sitting for too long throughout the day.

All of these factors put extra pressure on the blood vessels in your legs, damaging the valves within them. These valves normally help blood flow in one direction — damaged valves cause blood to flow backward and begin pooling in your legs. Varicose veins and spider veins are the results of this damage.

If you’ve found any unsightly veins on your legs, you may have also noticed swelling or fluid buildup alongside them.

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we have the right specialists, tools, and expertise to treat several vein health problems, including:

  • Varicose veins: Varicose veins are dark-colored, bulging, or twisted veins found beneath the surface of your skin. CVI, pregnancy, excess weight, and genetics can all increase your chance of developing them. In more severe untreated cases, they can interfere with your mobility by causing leg pain, heaviness, and cramping.

  • Spider veins: As their name suggests, spider veins often look like delicate spider webs and are red or purple in color. They are tiny, dilated blood vessels that lie just underneath your skin’s surface. Spider veins typically do not cause any symptoms, but they may be a sign that you are developing a more serious vein health issue.

  • Venous insufficiency: CVI is a vein disease caused by valve damage in your leg veins. As blood begins to flow backward and pool, more pressure builds in your veins, causing them to swell and bulge. You may also notice changes in your skin color, the formation of open sores (ulcers), and other health complications. Our CVI treatments address faulty veins by closing them off or removing them to alleviate symptoms and improve your overall health.

  • Leg swelling: Are your legs and ankles puffy or swollen? It may be due to CVI, pregnancy, varicose veins, or another underlying health condition that is interfering with your body’s fluid balance. If your leg swelling is caused by CVI or another vein health issue, we are here to help.

  • Leg heaviness: Leg swelling, CVI, and peripheral artery disease can all cause your legs to feel weighed down. This is most likely due to fluid buildup in your feet, ankles, and legs, which can make them heavy or tight-feeling. You can try rest and elevation, but if that does not help, our vein specialists can.

  • Leg cramps: Do your legs feel more sore or crampy than usual? Have your cramps woken you up in the middle of the night out of a sound sleep? It may be a sign of varicose veins or an electrolyte imbalance. If getting more sodium and potassium into your diet does not help, you may have an underlying vein health issue.

Do I Need Vein Treatment?

We recommend coming in to see us for a free vein health consultation if you have noticed any signs of a vein health issue. Your veins are important for carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout your body. When they are damaged, your risk of health complications increases. Damaged leg veins lead to swelling, pain, and cramping. If they are left untreated, you may develop other issues that become harder to treat later on.

Our Vein Treatments in Clifton New Jersey

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, our board-certified vascular specialists are among the best vein doctors in the Clifton area. We pride ourselves on our patient-centered care approach, with compassion and caring at the heart of everything we do.

We use only the most advanced techniques for treating varicose veins, spider veins, venous insufficiency, and more. All of our treatments are minimally invasive, meaning they do not require surgery or large incisions. Instead, our vein specialists use specially designed thin instruments that are inserted through tiny punctures in your skin to treat or remove damaged veins. These procedures can be done during your lunch break, taking an average of 30 minutes or less. You will be able to walk immediately after the procedure and get back to your normal routine within a few days.

We specialize in several industry-standard techniques at our state-of-the-art Clifton clinic, each designed to treat vein problems in a unique way. Your vein specialist will determine which treatment is the best option for your aesthetic and vein health goals.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

When you look for a treatment option, you likely want one that is going to provide lasting results for years. ClosureFAST is a well-studied varicose vein treatment for large, deep leg veins. This technology uses heat generated from radio waves to seal veins shut, cutting off blood flow through them. Studies have found that results from ClosureFAST can last five years or longer, making it the ideal treatment for varicose veins.

Foam Sclerotherapy

One of the most popular treatment options for spider veins is foam sclerotherapy. It uses a chemical foam solution containing a sclerosing agent or sclerosant, which irritates your spider veins. As a result, they collapse, cutting off the blood supply through them. Your body eventually reabsorbs these collapsed veins and reroutes blood to your remaining healthy veins. Researchers have found that foam sclerotherapy is highly successful, resolving spider veins in nearly all cases when done correctly.

ClariVein®

Two is always better than one — that is why ClariVein® combines two different methods to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. Doctors and scientists created ClariVein to mechanically destroy veins and administer foam sclerotherapy. Your vein specialist will insert an extremely long, thin catheter into your leg vein, which contains a rotating tip at the end. As the tip spins, it creates scar tissue along the vein wall and releases a sclerosing agent. This FDA-approved treatment is proven to resolve spider vein and varicose vein symptoms.

Varithena™

Varithena™ is an FDA-approved sclerotherapy treatment that uses a specialized chemical formulation known as polidocanol endovenous microfoam (PEM). It has been used for over 10 years as a mainstay treatment for spider veins and varicose veins. The PEM foam in Varithena is administered at a higher concentration than other foam sclerotherapy methods, which triggers your body’s blood-clotting response. Blood clots form and cut off blood flow through the vein, causing it to collapse.

VenaSeal™

The FDA approved VenaSeal™ in 2015 for treating varicose veins using a specially formulated medical-grade adhesive. It is currently the only problem vein treatment on the market that does not irritate the vein using heat, lasers, or chemicals. As a result, VenaSeal is considered a gentle treatment that causes fewer side effects than other vein treatments.

Phlebectomy

A phlebectomy or microphlebectomy removes problem veins that may be too difficult to close off with other vein treatments. This procedure uses a small hook to remove the vein. Your vein specialist will create a series of tiny punctures that heal well and are barely visible. Phlebectomy is the preferred treatment for larger varicose veins that are not suited for VenaSeal, sclerotherapy, or other therapies. Sometimes, a phlebectomy is used to remove smaller veins that have grown off of larger veins that were treated with sclerotherapy or RFA in the past.

What To Expect During Your First Visit

At your initial consultation visit at our Clifton clinic, your vein specialist will develop a treatment plan to meet your specific needs.

Every person who walks through our doors is unique, and we treat them as such. Your plan will be tailored to your specific vein health and cosmetic goals.

During your appointment, one of our vein specialists will perform a physical exam to ask about your symptoms and look at your legs. They may also use advanced imaging tests to get to the root cause of your symptoms. They will then go over which of our pain-free treatments is best for you.

Our patient specialists will also call your insurance company to verify coverage and work out costs. If your treatment is medically necessary, insurance may cover some or all of the associated costs.
