What Is Causing Your Vein Health Issue?

Most vein health issues in the legs stem from a condition known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Your leg veins work hard against the pull of gravity to carry blood from your feet and legs up toward your heart. Your calf muscles squeeze these veins to help pump blood, functioning as a “second heart.” There are also valves in the leg veins that ensure blood does not flow back down into your legs.

If you do not move enough throughout the day, or if you carry extra weight, blood can begin to collect in your legs. Without the pumping action of your calf muscles, blood cannot be pushed upward. These situations put extra pressure on your leg veins, causing them to swell over time. Eventually, the valves in the veins also become damaged, allowing blood to flow backward. This creates the perfect storm for vein damage.

As your veins swell, they may begin to dilate and stick out from underneath your skin. Extra blood pooling in your feet and legs can lead to additional uncomfortable symptoms. Together, these vein health issues impact not only your appearance but your health as well.

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we specialize in treating CVI and its complications. Our vein specialists know the key to treating them is to identify the swollen, leaky veins, then close or remove them. Vein health issues we treat include:

  • Venous insufficiency: Venous insufficiency is a vascular disease that prevents your veins from carrying blood from your legs to your heart. Damaged valves create leaky blood vessels that eventually lead to spider veins, varicose veins, and other complications. If left untreated, you are at an increased risk of blood clots and mobility issues.

  • Spider veins: Much like their name, spider veins resemble delicate spider webs just underneath the skin. They may be red or purple, and they do not bulge outward. While they may seem initially harmless, spider veins are often a sign that you are developing CVI. It is best to treat them as soon as possible.

  • Varicose veins: Varicose veins are large, twisted, rope-like veins that bulge out from underneath the skin. You are more likely to develop varicose veins if you have a family history of them, are currently or previously have been pregnant, or carry excess weight. In more severe cases, varicose veins may collect blood and lead to leg cramps, swelling, or heaviness.

  • Leg heaviness: Leg heaviness can feel burdensome — like you are walking around with two bricks tied to your feet. It may be a sign of CVI or peripheral artery disease (PAD) caused by blood collecting in your legs and feet. If rest and elevation do not seem to help your symptoms, give our Toms River clinic a call.

  • Leg cramps: The occasional leg cramp can be a nuisance, but they should be few and far between. If you have noticed your legs are cramping more often than usual, especially at night, you may have CVI or another vein health issue. Give us a call today, especially if you have spider veins or varicose veins that may be contributing to your symptoms.

  • Leg swelling: After a long day on your feet or sitting, you may notice your legs are more swollen than usual. This is a sign that the valves in your leg veins are damaged, most likely from CVI. If elevation does not seem to help bring down your swelling, we are here to help.

Is Vein Treatment Right for You?

We recommend taking advantage of your complimentary vein screening at our Toms River clinic if you have noticed any symptoms of a vein health issue. Your veins are an important part of your overall health, as they bring oxygen and nutrients to your body’s tissues. When they become damaged, they can no longer do their job properly, putting you at risk of health complications or unwanted symptoms. If you leave them untreated, vein issues can progress and become harder to address.

You may be a candidate for vein treatment if you have:

  • Varicose veins or spider veins
  • Swollen, heavy, and/or crampy legs
  • Ulcers or open sores on your legs or ankles
  • Severe changes in your skin texture or color

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we specialize in treating spider veins, varicose veins, and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). With a winning combination of care, compassion, and science-backed medicine, our vein treatments are second-to-none.

We understand that every person is unique, and you deserve to be treated as such. That is why our vein specialists specially tailor your treatment plan to your symptoms and cosmetic goals. By addressing the leaky veins and blood vessels causing bulging veins or leg swelling, pain, or heaviness, we offer long-lasting results you will love.

Your vein specialist will work closely with you to determine which treatment option is best for you. All of our treatments are industry standard, well-studied, and trusted to improve the look of your legs and your symptoms.

Foam Sclerotherapy

A popular treatment option used to clear away delicate spider veins is foam sclerotherapy. During this treatment, your vein specialist will inject a chemical foam into the affected vein using a very small needle. The foam contains a sclerosant or sclerosing agent that irritates the vein, causing it to collapse. Your body reabsorbs the collapsed vein, clearing your skin’s appearance.

ClariVein®

ClariVein® is an FDA-approved treatment that uses mechanochemical ablation to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. Specifically, it uses a combination of foam sclerotherapy and a rotating tip to irritate problem veins. A long, thin catheter containing the tip is inserted into the vein — when it spins, it creates scar tissue along the vein wall. The chemical foam irritates the vein further, causing it to collapse. The combination is highly effective and offers excellent results.

Varithena™

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we also offer Varithena™, a specially formulated foam sclerotherapy method. The doctors and researchers who developed Varithena created a highly concentrated polidocanol endovenous microfoam (PEM) that triggers the body’s blood clotting process. The blood clots block blood flow through the problem vein, eventually causing it to collapse. Varithena is a gold standard in sclerotherapy treatment.

VenaSeal™

VenaSeal™ is a vein treatment that does not use lasers, heat, or chemicals to irritate a problem vein. Instead, it uses a medical-grade adhesive to seal the vein shut, preventing any blood flow through it. VenaSeal is considered one of the more gentle treatments we offer at Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute.

Phlebectomy

In cases that are difficult to treat, your vein specialist may recommend removing the problem vein rather than trying to seal it off. This is known as a phlebectomy, and it is the preferred treatment for large varicose veins. During a phlebectomy, your vein specialist will create tiny punctures in your skin near the affected veins and use a special hook tool to remove them. The punctures leave minimal scarring.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

In addition to medical-grade adhesive, heat can also be used to seal off leaky varicose veins. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a technique that harnesses the power of radio waves to create heat. As the heat source moves through the problem vein, it seals it off, restricting blood flow. At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we use the ClosureFAST system, which provides long-lasting results.

Your first visit to our Toms River clinic is always free! We use it as an opportunity to get to know more about you and your vein health issues.
